Skyward Eye: A Night With Jonathan Rowden Group & Storytelling Without Words

8:oo p.m.

“This is just what the world needs right now.” -LA Music Blog, Anthony Marks

Skyward Eye is the second studio album on Orenda Records by Jonathan Rowden Group. The Last Bookstore presents them here in a special concert + conversation about the art and process of storytelling through musical composition, improvisation and wordless narrative. The music was inspired by epic works of fantasy in retro video games, literature, and “nerd culture” and is a distinctive blend of jazz, world music, classical and electronic music styles. The original artwork of Skyward Eye was painted exclusively for the release by NY Times bestselling author and graphic novelist Kazu Kibuishi (Harry Potter, Amulet, Flight).

Let us know you’re coming!

The Jonathan Rowden Group is proud to present this music as part of their 2017 album release west coast tour. We hope you’ll attend this free event and talk with us about what we love more than anything – adventuring into the unknown with people we love. Skyward Eye: Complete Edition is being presented as an interactive, hand-bound album x artbook featuring original paintings by Kazu Kibuishi, in-studio photography by Eron Rauch, interview transcripts, secrets and more. If possible, these will be available in limited quantity on February 23 (and definitely pre-orders).

Saxophonist/composer JONATHAN ROWDEN was born in Los Angeles, and raised along the west coast from Seattle to Orange County. Currently residing in the eastern Los Angeles area, his quartet’s debut in 2013 he has quickly gained a reputation as one of the foremost younger creative-music artists in the diverse LA jazz and creative-music scene. Classically trained and drawing from his electric background in music, he aims to create music that spans beyond traditional genres under the jazz umbrella, and explores new territory. His melodic lyricism, rhythmic acuity, and a fiery passion for group improvisation takes listeners on a journey beyond listening, and to more deeply engaging in the moment. Named in 2016 by the industry-defining Downbeat Magazine as “a name to watch as a signature voice on the Los Angeles jazz scene” and described by LA Music Blog as “a musical juggernaut” Rowden’s unique voice and penchant for combining driving, melodic-minded composition with free improvisation is turning heads across the country. His hotly anticipated sophomore album Skyward Eye” is in production and slated for release on February 17, 2017 with Orenda Records. His first album ‘Becoming’ released in 2014 solidified his reputation as a national contender in the creative music scene at large, amassing praise from critics both local and abroad.
