Nathan Landau, author of Car-Free Los Angeles and Southern California, opted for a non-traditional reading when he visited the Bookstore.  Taking to the streets and public transport, Landau guided us through subways, light rail, crosswalks and a funicular!

Our first stop was the subway, but we stopped to admire Union Station.  Here we boarded the Gold Line, hoofed it a bit, and took a detour through the Bradbury Building, famous from Blade Runner and as the site of numerous sci-fi nerd weddings.

We took a shortcut through Grand Central Market on Landau’s favorite form of transport: feet!

Bill German came and told us all some incredibly funny and intimate stories about The Rolling Stones garnered from his years on the road with them and his access to the band as the creator/editor/writer of Beggar’s Banquet, the official RS newsletter.

That’s Bill in the middle, Keith Richards on the right.

“Keith’s lucky the cops didn’t want to look in his bag,” German told us.

Chiwan Choi’s release party for Abductions was a hit. The evening began with a few tunes by Holland Greco, whose soulful voice and poppy hooks snagged passers-by.  Choi took the stage and, facing a rapt crowd, told us with a smile that his poetry was pretty depressing.  People were undeterred.

Choi’s book, Abductions, is being sold in-store now.

The first annual L.A. Zine Fest  drew a massive crowd to the Last Bookstore and the Mezzanine.  Henry Rollins and V. Vale were there, L.A. Record hosted the after party, and fun was had by all. We can’t wait to see next year’s Zine Fest!

If you’ve ever been in the store on an DTLA Art Walk night, you know that it’s pretty fricking awesome. It’s all hustle and bustle, with browsing customers, dj’s from our Record Store on the turntables, and staffers keeping up with the mayhem. Last Art Walk we were happy to include photographer Carolina Carvajal. Blackbook Photographyset up a photobooth, and we’re pretty pleased with the results. Please to enjoy these photos of some of our extremely attractive patrons?
