Founded in Brooklyn in 2009, the Bushwick Book Club meets every month and employs the talents of local songwriters and artists who plumb the depths of a chosen literary gem to create that rare and beautiful thing – a new song (or visual art, dance, film or snack). All songs are then performed at a live show. The Bushwick Book Club now has several branches all over the world, including Portland, LA, Seattle, Malmo, Sweden, Santa Barbara, New Orleans, and Toronto, Canada, with new chapters developing in Ireland and Wales. About You Were Never Really Here:
Joe has seen things that cannot be erased from his memory. His abusive childhood and the horrors he witnessed as a Marine and an FBI agent have left him damaged beyond repair. He earns a living rescuing girls who have been kidnapped into the sex trade.
When he’s hired to save the daughter of a corrupt New York senator held captive at a Manhattan brothel, he stumbles into a dangerous conspiracy, and when Joe’s small web of associates are wiped out, he realizes that he has no choice but to take the fight to the men who want him dead. Brutal and redemptive in equal measure, You Were Never Really Here is an adrenaline shot of a thriller, laced with corruption, revenge, and the darkest of inner demons.
UK Praise for You Were Never Really Here

pages than most crime novels three times the length do” —The Times, Crime Books of the Year 2016
“A striking and powerful noir debut that can be consumed in a single sitting. . . . Ames reveals himself here
as a stylish thriller writer” —Daily Mail
“[A] fast-moving, agreeably violent and perfectly pared-down novella” —Spectator
